Using AI instead of hiring staff pays off on the repeat share of a desk, and the October 1, 2026 minimum wage increases make that share more expensive. That day Ontario raises its general minimum wage to $17.95, Nova Scotia to $17.00, Manitoba to $16.40 and Saskatchewan to $15.70 an hour. At those rates the routine 70% of one full-time front-desk or support desk models at C$2,719 to C$3,109 a month loaded. Minimum wages from October 1, 2026

On October 1, 2026 the general minimum wage rises in Ontario, Nova Scotia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Ontario ties its annual increase to the Ontario Consumer Price Index, and its new student rate is $16.90 an hour.

The raise itself is small per hour and adds up per desk. A full-time desk works 40 hours a week, or 173.2 hours a month at the 4.33 weeks our calculator uses. In Ontario the $0.35 increase adds C$60.62 a month in wages alone, or C$727 a year, for every full-time person at the minimum. In Manitoba the same desk costs C$69.28 more a month. The minimum is the floor: a receptionist or support agent paid above it costs more, and the gap below widens accordingly.

The loaded cost of an hour of front-desk and support work

A loaded hour is what one hour of a desk costs the employer: the wage plus benefits, payroll contributions, paid leave, tools and the management time around the role. The statutory part of that list depends on the province and on the business.

This page uses one public benchmark for the gross-up. In June 2026, benefits made up 30.0% of what U.S. private-industry employers paid per hour worked, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics release of September 9, 2026. Applied to a Canadian minimum wage, the wage becomes 70% of the loaded hour, so Ontario's $17.95 models at about C$25.64 loaded. A side effect of that ratio: the routine 70% of a loaded desk equals the desk's wage bill. Treat that as a proxy: it is a U.S. ratio used on Canadian wages, and your payroll provider can give you the exact figure for your business.

Turnover sits on top. Replacing one person can cost one-half to two times their annual salary, and Gallup's 2019 estimate calls that range conservative. Our model leaves turnover out of the monthly figure, so the numbers below understate the human side.

Which tasks move to an AI employee and which stay with people

An AI employee takes the repeat share of a desk: questions answered from written material, first drafts, intake and record keeping. Our model moves 70% of a routine desk and leaves 30% with a person, which is where the judgement lives.

Province by province: a full-time desk against a flat $149 or $599

At the October 2026 minimum wage, the routine share of one full-time desk models at C$2,508 to C$2,898 a month more than one AI employee on the Starter plan. The table shows each step, so you can replace any column with your own figure.
