October 2026 jobs report: what 6.7% unemployment means for AI vs hiring an employee

· 6 min read

Statistics Canada released the Labour Force Survey for October 2026 on November 6. Employment was little changed (−4,700), the unemployment rate rose 0.2 points to 6.7%, and the number of private sector employees fell by 53,000, the first decline since February. Average hourly wages rose 2.2% year over year to $37.89. For a small business weighing AI vs hiring an employee, the numbers point two ways: candidates are easier to find this autumn, and an hour of a person's time keeps costing more.

What the October Labour Force Survey shows

The survey's reference week was October 11 to 17, 2026 (Statistics Canada, The Daily, November 6, 2026).

Candidates are easier to find this autumn

Just under one in five people who were unemployed in September had found work in October. Before the pandemic the same months averaged one in four. More people are searching (+33,000 in October), and nearly a quarter of the unemployed have been looking for more than six months.

For a small business this means a job ad for a front-desk or sales role is likely to draw more applicants than in the same months of 2017 to 2019. A person who handles phone calls, negotiation and the customer who is ready to pay is easier to hire now.

An hour of a person still costs more

The average hourly wage of employees reached $37.89 in October, up 2.2% from a year earlier. The same release reports that workers in sales and service occupations had the lowest average hourly wage of any broad occupational group, $24.19, and the lowest share who were very satisfied with their job, 54.3% against 60.9% for all workers.

Our arithmetic for one full-time desk at that wage: $24.19 × 40 hours × 4.33 weeks = about C$4,190 a month in wages, before CPP, EI, vacation pay and benefits. The desk covers 40 hours of a week that has 168.

Provincial minimum wages in Ontario, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan rose on October 1; the math for a minimum-wage desk is in AI instead of hiring staff: the October 2026 math. To run the numbers on your own hours and rate, use the ROI calculator.

AI vs hiring an employee: split the desk

A small team can hire the person and move the written queue to an AI employee. The split below is how the Unistaff.ai AI inbound sales manager is built today.

Four questions decide which side a desk falls on, set out on AI instead of hiring staff: is it written down, does it repeat, can a reply be checked before it costs you anything, and do enquiries arrive after hours.

What to do before you post the job ad

  1. Count two weeks of enquiries by channel and hour. If most come by phone, hire the person first.
  2. Write down the prices, hours, service area and the rules the desk must never break.
  3. Run the written channels on a 30-day pilot with the AI employee as a Trainee, so every reply waits for your approval.
  4. Post the job ad for what the review shows is left: calls, negotiation, bookings and the customers ready to pay.
  5. Decide on the weekly review numbers: conversations, leads and handovers. Timing depends on your volume; a month of enquiries is the usual minimum to judge.

6.7%, up 0.2 percentage points from September, according to the Labour Force Survey released by Statistics Canada on November 6, 2026. Employment was little changed (−4,700).

$37.89 for employees, up 2.2% (+$0.83) from October 2025, not seasonally adjusted. Sales and service occupations had the lowest average of any broad occupational group, $24.19.

For a desk of written, repeating enquiries that often arrive after hours, test an AI employee on a 30-day pilot first. For phone-first work, negotiation and judgment, hire the person: the October data show more candidates searching for work.
